Polarization remote control in 3D

January 31, 2021

Metasurface polarization optics—platforms that can structure light’s polarization point-by-point at the nanoscale—have enabled compact polarization imaging and characterization systems. However, so far these schemes (and conventional polarization optics) can only control incoming polarization in one plane, transverse to the propagation direction. In a recent effort, we have introduced a new class of metasurface polarization optics which can perform parallel processing on incoming light over multiple planes along the propagation direction. After a single interaction with our new devices,...

Meta-optics for virtual reality

January 30, 2021

Recent breakthroughs in virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) technologies have not only attracted much attention from the scientific and industrial communities but have also piqued the interest of the general public. However, the widespread use of VR/AR devices is hindered by limitations associated with optical elements such as eyepieces, which are not only bulky but also suffer from poor imaging performance. A comfortable VR/AR display that meets the requirements of high quality near-eye imaging is needed. In this...

Fall 2020 CAS Faculty Grant Recipients

January 29, 2021

The Harvard Center for African Studies supports research questions and opportunities for which other funding is not readily available. The primary purpose for supporting faculty-led projects related to Africa, is to seed new areas of research and education or deepen existing areas. Grants focus on any country in Africa, or that advance ideas that are related to Africa-Asia, or other regional engagements that connect Africa to the Global South. Research or educational opportunities at any school at Harvard are welcomed. More information:...

Great success of January birthday celebration for Wonho, Kayla, Ramya and Will (Zizhao)

January 28, 2021

At the last group meeting of January 2021, the group passed a joyful moment in celebrating the birthdays for four of the members: Wonho, Kayla, Ramya and Will (Zizhao). They shared some interesting and impressive stories that they have within Weitz Lab. Previously, Dave offered delicious birthday cakes to these people and the whole group had some individually wrapped nice snacks (chocolate cookies, French crepes, Coca-Cola, biscuits…)
